The South Asian Island nation of Maldives has one of the most unique geography in the world. The country comprises of 26 natural atolls consisting of dual island chains. It is located on top of a vast underwater mountain range. Ocean water engulfing the 1190 islands and sandbanks is home to one of the most diverse marine treasures of the world. Blessed with crystal clear beaches, these islands are protected by a reef structure which houses a spectacular underwater life.
It is believed that the island nation was inhabited over 2500 years ago. People of the Maldivies began to embrace Islam in the year 1153 AD. Today, more than 98% of Maldivians are Muslim.
